WWE WrestleMania X8 is a wrestling game based on the World Wrestling Entertainment (formerly known as World Wrestling Federation) license. The core gameplay relies on a grappling system, featuring a variety of specific grapple moves, and counter move system, allowing the player to respond with counters assigned to different buttons. A few weapon-based moves are also included, as well as signature moves and entrances unique to each wrestler.
Match types include Standard, Hardcore, Table, Ladder, TLC, Battle Royal, Steel Cage, Hell in a Cell, and Ironman. The number of participants in the match varies from singles, tag team, handicap, Triple Threat, Fatal Four-Way, to large-scale matches Battle Royal and Royal Rumble. The Path of a Champion game mode provides an opportunity to win any of the titles in WWF Championship, WWF Intercontinental Championship, WWF European Championship, WWF Light Heavyweight Championship, WWF Hardcore Championship and World Tag Team Championship (all the championship names are still referred to as “WWF”, despite the promotion’s name change).
In the Battle for the Belts mode, the player can attempt to win one of fifty-one fictional belts. The game also includes a Create-A-Wrestler mode, in which the player can create a wrestler with customized appearance, moves, profile, and other options.
Legends of Wrestling takes one of America’s most popular (fake) sports and turns back the clock. The game is all about the classic superstars including Hulk Hogan, Bret “Hitman” Hart, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, Rob Van Dam, Terry Funk, The Road Warriors and George “The Animal” Steele.
The game features in-depth match analysis and career guidance by some of wrestling’s greatest managers, including Captain Lou Albano and “The Mouth Of The South” Jimmy Hart. They will guide you through your career should you chose that mode of play. For those who just want to hit the mats right away, you can simply jump into an exhibition match in several match types including Tag Team Challenge, Three- and Four-Way Dances, and special guest referees.
