Assassin’s Creed

In the year 2012, a seemingly ordinary bartender named Desmond Miles is abducted by a mysterious organization. The captors attach Desmond to a strange device called “Animus”, which allows him to access the memory of his ancestor, an assassin named Altaïr. For some reason, the reconstruction of Altaïr’s memories is vital to the captors.

After accessing Altaïr’s memory, Desmond is able to experience the events that took place in the Holy Land in the year 1191, the time of the Third Crusade. Al Mualim, the leader of the assassins, orders Altaïr to kill nine prominent historical figures, who supposedly let war and corruption take over the Holy Land.

During most of the game, the player controls Altaïr; however, it is clearly indicated that controlling him is a part of Desmond’s experience. The player is also able to control Desmond between his sessions in the “Animus”.

The game’s most innovative feature is the freedom of choice and movement. Every architectural detail like window ledges, carvings in the stone or wooden bars can be used to move on the walls. This allows the player to have intense chase scenes if by any chance you’re hunted by the guard.

There are several ways you can reach your goal in the game. Using eavesdropping, interrogation and pickpocketing, you can find out information about your next target. You can then use this information to choose whether you take on the targets by full frontal assault or with a properly placed throwing knife from the cover of the rooftops.

Depending on your choice, you’ll have to deal with the citizens and knights of the cities who will become suspicious of a cloaked person wondering on the rooftops or near the mission targets. There are several situations where you can blend in the crowd, with luck, you can take out your target without anyone looking your way. Altaïr has a small but effective arsenal of weapons, such as swords and throwing knives and he can learn new combat skills to help him on his mission.

Assassin’s Creed II

Desmond Miles, the last in the line of the ancient order of Assassins, has been captured by the modern-day descendants of the Templars, forced to experience past events through a device called Animus in order to obtain crucial information. However, one of the scientists unexpectedly switches sides, asking Desmond to put his trust in her hands and follow her out of the complex. Soon afterwards they escape the holding place and team up with some new allies that intend to use Desmond’s knowledge against the Templars. Their new device is called Animus 2.0, an upgraded version of the original. This time, Desmond relives the life of Ezio Auditore di Firenze, a man who lived in Italy in the 15th century.Ezio is a boisterous, seemingly carefree young man who likes to pick fights and chase skirts. But all that changes when his father and little brother are publicly executed by a man he trusted. Driven by vengeance, Ezio begins to discover more about his father’s life, and realizes that he, too, belonged to the organization of the Assassins. Ezio becomes a skillful assassin himself, and is ready to go all the way to avenge the death of the people he loved.

The core gameplay resembles that of the previous game. The protagonist can freely explore several large cities and rural locations on foot or on horseback. It is also possible to swim and navigate boats in the game. Nearly every building can be climbed on, and the protagonist can access the tallest rooftops, observing the panorama with his Eagle Vision. Free-form jumping and running occupies a considerable portion of the gameplay. 

One of the sequel’s most notable additions is the financial system, which was not present in the first game. Items, weapons and armor can be bought in shops and repaired for money. There are many more weapon types and individual weapons and armor in the game. Ezio can carry swords, daggers, throwing knives, smoke bombs, a pistol, and a variety of upgradeable armor types. Weapons can also be picked up from fallen enemies and used in the same battle. Abundant treasure can be collected from various spots in the game world.

There are new ways of being stealthy in this sequel. Ezio can pay courtesans to distract guards, hire mercenaries to fight them, or commission thieves to create a distraction. Mission objectives and particularly the steps needed to accomplish them are noticeably more varied than in the previous game. The protagonist often receives new equipment and new challenges to experiment with. A few of these are built like mini-games: for example, at one point Ezio will pilot a flying device. The main character has his own headquarters in the game, a mansion and a small town adjacent to it. It is possible to invest money into the town’s reconstruction, as well as customize the mansion.

The game features a significantly larger amount of side quests than its predecessor. A series of sub-quests involves locating, collecting and deciphering ancient words of wisdom that supposedly hold the secret of the universe. These quests often involve traversing complex indoor platform environments in order to reach the goal. These sequences require precise jumping and contain light puzzle-solving elements, similarly to contemporary Prince of Persia games.

Assassin’s Creed III

Assassin’s Creed III is a historical open world action-adventure game with a focus on stealth. Despite the numbering it is the fifth main game in the series and a direct sequel to the previous game Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. After the events of the previous game the series’ protagonist Desmond Miles travels with father William and the two companions Rebecca and Shaun to a cave in New York where they have located a temple made by the members of the First Civilization. Using the Apple of Eden, Desmond is able to activate a large part of the equipment. It was built to help protect Earth against a solar flare that threatens to wipe out the planet. Desmond falls into a fugue state however and is brought into Animus, the virtual reality machine that allows him to experience his ancestral memories. He will use Animus to find the answers for the First Civilization’s warning, and the threat posed by the Knight Templars and their modern day organization Abstergo Industries.From that initial modern day environment the rest of the game is largely set in Colonial America, before, during and after the American Revolution from 1753 to 1783. The main protagonist for this game is Ratonhnhaké:ton (Connor), a member of the Mohawk tribe. He is only introduced after a substantial portion of the game as it first follows his father, the Londoner Haytham Kenway, who travels to America after killing an Assassin in the London Opera. The player experiences the gameplay of the opera killing, the journey on the boat, and the arrival in Boston. Haytham is a Templar. He stole a key in the Opera and works together with five men loyal to his cause to locate a storehouse the medallion key is for. As he also gets involved in the local events, he meets the Mohawk woman Kaniehti:io (Ziio) and she gives birth to Connor. The game then offers 30 years of Connor’s life to play, from his childhood with the Mohawk tribe through the training to become an Assassin after his village is attacked by the Templars under the command of his father. The Assassin-Templar war then becomes part of the American Revolution.

The open world environment is introduced as soon as Haytham arrives in Boston. Eventually the player also gets to explore New York, the Mohawk village, a large part of the American Colonial Frontier, various settlements such as Lexington, Concord and Charlestown, a brief visit in Philadelphia and the entire Eastern seaboard during the naval missions where Connor commands the warship Aquila. Various historical figures are met along the way and all information about characters and locations are described with a humorous tone in the Animus database. As almost all of the game is played out in a virtual reality environment, sections can be reloaded quickly and often small wireframe-like glitches are shown to remind the player it is just a simulation. There are however also missions with Desmond in the present day world where he needs to retrieve power sources in countries such as Italy and Brazil to open the temple gate.

Next to the main storyline there are various optional missions and tasks that are found by exploring the environment. The fighting system uses melee and ranged weapons with various actions to disarm, attack, parry, fire and assassinate based on the equipped weapon. Counter attacks are new and shown in slow motion to make room to strike. Ranged weapons such as muskets and rifles are new to the series and they have a considerable reload time. The free running movement to climb almost any building or obstacle has been modified to tie the different actions into a fluid motion by keeping a single button or key pressed. It is however still possible to deviate with different actions at any moment to choose a new path. Hiding places now include mobile vehicles such as haystacks in wagons that can be used to sneak up on enemies. Disguises can be worn to fool soldiers, but not the officers. There is a three-tier notoriety system where becoming incognito involves running away and hiding, but also tearing down wanted posters and bribing town criers. All computer-controlled characters have their own routines and this is now influenced by the weather as well, with a day-and-night and seasons cycle.

Next to the gameplay that returns from the earlier games this title introduces hunting and trapping animals in the wilderness to sell the skin. A large part of the game can also be spent building the settlement Davenport Homestead. Starting out with a single building, NPCs called artisans can be convinced to settle near the Homestead. This brings raw materials and facilities that can be used to craft. Raw goods and crafted items then form a local economy where the player can decide to sell them through land caravans or via sea convoys. Progress in the homestead is also shown visually with new people working and buildings that appear. Artisans receive upgrades after completing missions for them and this provides better equipment and weapons. Money is earned through the Homestead economy, but also by discovering hidden chests, selling spoils of hunting, looting opponents and pickpocketing. There are also tools to pick locks through a short, interactive sequence. Another, very different part is played on the The Eastern seaboard with naval campaigns. Connor has to command the ship through sails, cover and cannons in full naval combat and with a large amount of upgrades available for the ship over time. The game also contains three historical board games that can be played on the ship, in the cities or the Homestead: Bowls, Morris and Fanorona.

Additional challenges are unlocked by joining the three clubs: hunting, brawling and thieving. These each offer optional goals in different tiers. Other quests involve hunting down optional trinkets, collecting almanac pages and feathers, delivering letters, performing assassination contracts, synchronizing view points and more. Each of the three large environments (Boston, Frontier, New York) needs to be freed from Templar influence by liberating districts. Liberation reduces the taxes for Homestead convoys. To maintain a presence up to six people can be recruited and their skills (assassination, bodyguard etc.) can be called upon in times of need. Companions can also often be instructed with basic commands. When not needed, they can be sent out to other states to complete missions on their own and they bring back a lot of money and rewards. Through these missions their skills are upgraded, lowering the risk towards success. The three areas contain forts that can be captured to drive out other nations.

Multiplayer includes 12 different game modes and is presented as an entertainment product of Abstergo Industries. Next to the standard offerings there is the cooperative Wolfpack mode where up to four players work together through 25 stages to kill NPCs with a time limit. Another is the Domination team mode where the Animus game console is used to capture areas of a virtual map and protect them from the opposite team.

Black Flag

Abstergo Industries – modern-day front for the organization of the Templars – has opened an entertainment subsidiary in Montreal, Quebec, using advanced technology that allows reliving fragments from the lives of people from the past. The unnamed protagonist is hired by the company to connect to the life of Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer living in the eighteenth century. Through a series of events Edward assumes the identity of a rogue member of the Assassins reporting to Laureano Torres, the Governor of Cuba and also the Grand Master of the Templars. Initially motivated by greed, Edward finds himself at odds with both the Templars and the Assassins, who are both pursuing a mysterious man known as the Sage in order to gain access to the secret technology of the First Civilization.

The game’s world is larger than in any of the previous games, and is available for exploration in a seamless fashion, without transitions or loading between ship navigation, swimming, and exploring the land. Much of the Caribbean Sea can be physically explored, including three full-fledged cities (Havana, Kingston, and Nassau) as well as smaller settlements and uninhabited islands. The protagonist can now hunt animals, fish, and uncover treasure maps. Early in the game Edward gains access to the Jackdaw, a ship that can be outfitted, upgraded, and used in naval battles. It is also possible to recruit crew members for the ship.

Brotherhood

The modern-day Assassins, including Desmond Miles, make their escape and go into hiding from the Templars. They take refuge into modern-day Monteriggioni, which has been preserved as an historical site. There, they setup the Animus for Desmond to explore deeper into Ezio’s past and discover more about the missing Pieces of Eden. Ezio’s story takes place immediately after the end of Assassin’s Creed II, and has him leaving Rome to head back to Monteriggioni. There, he is ambushed and the Piece of Eden he has found is stolen. He must head back to Rome, which has since been seized by the Borgia, rescue its people, and recover what has been lost.

New to the Assassin’s Creed series is a multiplayer component. The backstory behind the multiplayer mode is that that Abstergo, the Templar organization, is using Animus devices to train their recruits to become Assassins. You take on the role of an Abstergo recruit, and must find and assassinate your target while being tracked for assassination yourself. You must make sure that you do not arouse suspicion, otherwise it will become obvious that you are an assassin rather than a citizen, making it easier for you to be spotted and taken down. As you play, you earn points which allow you to level up and upgrade your character’s skills and abilities.

Revelations

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is an entry in the historical series with an open world environment and a focus on stealthy gameplay. Once Desmond Miles is forced to stab his ally, he falls into a coma. He then returns to the Animus to retain his consciousness. Once in the Animus, he falls into a back door known as the Black Room. There he hopes to reassemble his fragmented mind, to awake from his coma. He can do this by connecting his mind by locating a key memory. Along the road to doing that, he starts to relive the later memories of Ezio. The new Grand Master of the Assassin Order, after freeing Italy from the Templar threat, questions his life as an Assassin, wondering how it would’ve been had he never been one. Ezio thus sets out on a pilgrimage to his predecessor’s homeland of Masyaf, which he discovers has been overrun by the Templars. There he finds an ancient artifact, which is locked away, and can only be opened with five keys. The search for these seals takes him to Constantinople, where he finds out that there is an army of Templars forming in the city, threatening to destabilize the region. Ezio must follow in the footsteps of his spiritual mentor, Altaïr, to lead him to discovery and revelation. The game follows the series’ open world gameplay. Though in this game there’s a new addition, an item called the hookblade, which is used to zip-line across the city or grab enemies to yank them in for a combo attack. The hookblade speeds up navigation around the city by around 30%. As well as the hookblade, Enzio has hundreds of different bomb variations that he can use, which are crafted. The game also added and expanded upon the seizing districts of the city from the Templars. While capturing a district is really similar to Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, the Templars will try to capture it back. Enzio must defend the districts captured by using a tower defense minigame, where he controls assassins from rooftops against waves and waves of Templar soldiers and siege equipment. The game is playable in 3D across all platforms, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, with the console versions being able to support both stereoscopic 3D mode for 3D TVs and 2D for HDTVs. All Revelations gameplay and cinematics also have S3D support.

Multiplayer is also present. The mode expands upon the basics of online modes from Brotherhood with new characters and locations. Players can customize their appearance and weapons, additionally they can start a guild and create a unique coat of arms. Matchmaking and user interface also have been improved. As well, players level up in the multiplayer game, and when they do, they move up in their Abstergo Templar rank and gain access to more information about the company.

New multiplayer modes are added to the already existing ones, including “story oriented quests”, as well as Capture the Flag. Some multiplayer maps are based on the island of Rhodes. Among the new additions is Deathmatch, which is different in the way that there is no compass pointing towards an assigned target, instead, there is a box on the top right of your screen where the current target is displayed. It glows blue when the character is in line of sight of the target.

Rogue
